Olograph is a writing environment run by Lovett Ventures Inc., operating as Olograph, for courses at institutions that license it. This page says what Olograph records, where it is kept and when it is deleted. Where an institution has an agreement with Olograph, that agreement governs.

What Olograph records

  • Name, email address and course role, from the list of students the instructor provides.
  • The essay text and any images inserted.
  • How the essay was written: each change to the text and when it happened (typing, deleting, pasting, formatting, undo), where the cursor was placed, copies and pastes inside the editor, switching away from the editor and back, and writing session times.
  • The browser's identification string (user agent) and device type.
  • IP addresses, in sign-in and technical logs.
  • Each submission's check results (Clear or Worth a look, with reasons), and a log of each time course staff open a record.

Not recorded: the screen, other tabs or apps, the camera or microphone, or anything typed outside the editor. No student numbers, dates of birth, government ID, financial or health information.

How it is used

So the instructor can see how an assignment was written. Four fixed, rule-based checks run on each submission. The result is Clear or Worth a look, with no number. Worth a look is where to look, never a finding; the instructor and the institution make every decision. Typing timing is used only to check that one submission, never to build a profile of anyone.

No AI

No AI or machine learning is used anywhere in Olograph. Student writing is never sent to an AI service, and nothing is trained on student work.

Where it is stored

In Canada, encrypted at rest and in transit. Olograph's infrastructure providers act under data processing agreements: Supabase for the database, sign-in and file storage, Vercel for the web pages, and Amazon Web Services for email. Their support staff work in several countries and may access data to run the service. Short technical logs (IP address, page addresses, browser, never writing) may be held outside Canada.

How long it is kept

Each essay, its record and its results are deleted together 90 days after the course ends. A submission that is part of an open academic integrity case is held until the case closes, then deleted 30 days later. A content-free record of each submission (its number, times and fingerprint) and the staff access log are kept one year. Error and sign-in logs are kept 90 days.

What Olograph never does

Student data is never sold, used for advertising or marketing, used for research, or used to train AI.

The demo request form

If you book a demo, the name, work email, institution and role you enter are sent to Make, an automation service in the United States, which passes them to Olograph. They are used only to arrange your demo.
